The 2019 MPAPI event was fun for those interested in viewing and purchasing original paintings. Three paint outs, six art sales, and many opportunities for mingling with the artists made for a full 9-day art experience schedule.  A roster of 23 artists comprised of 5 artists from Hawaii, 13 returning artists from over the last 13 years, and 5 new artists to the event.  This combination has proved to keep the show ‘fresh’ and allow our attendees the opportunity to meet artists they may not have met in the past as well as view new artworks with different painting styles.

Mahalo to all the painters for creating the most inspiring collection of fine art in the 14 years of the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational.  Please visit the Artists’ page on our website for links to all the invited painters from this year’s event.

The event culminated with the:

  • Art to Heart Gala & Art Sale sponsored by the Royal Lahaina Resort
  • Artists’ Aloha Reception & Art Sale
  • Artists’ Panel Discussion with Q&A
  • Artists’ Mahalo Gathering & Art Sale
  • Building a Fine Arts Museum on West Maui Panel Discussion with Q&A

Twenty awards were given that depicted the quality, variety of subjects, and artistic styles of the artists.  Monetary awards were presented to Best in Show, Best Body of Work, Quick Draw and the Univ. of California Irvine Institute and Museum of California Art.  The event judge, Jean Stern, once again indicated this was the most challenging year to select the award winning paintings.

The Best in Show award winner, Mark Brown was presented the Maui Arts League $1000 cash award and $250 Gamblin Gift Certificate.

The Best Body of Work award winner, Carl Bretzke was presented the Maui Arts League $500 cash award and $150 Richeson Gift Certificate.

The University of California Irvine Institute and Museum of California Art award winner, Terry Miura was presented the Maui Arts League $250 cash award.  In addition,  Terry received the prestigious Artists’ Choice and Collectors’ Choice awards.  For this collective recognition of three significant awards, he received the Southwest Art ‘Excellence in Art’ award of a full page ad.

Ronaldo Macedo, David Savellano, and Suzie Baker received UCI IMCA Honorable Mentions.

Congratulations to the award winners and to all the artists for their inspiring artworks. Our continued thanks to the judge, Jean Stern, Associate Director, of the University of California Irvine Museum and Institute of California Art, who has been with us for 13 years.

MPAPI event sponsors with $2500 and above in cash or in-kind donations have the opportunity to select a painting to receive a sponsor ribbon award.  Some of these awards receive gift certificates from the event’s art supply sponsors.  Mahalo to all of the sponsors that are integral in making the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational a success; year after year.
