The Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational event is held on the West Side of Maui.  The artist roster is limited to 25 artists.  It is comprised of approximately 8 artists from Hawaii, 8 returning artists from previous years, and 8 new artists to the event with one extra slot available.

An Anonymous Selection Committee, comprised of two professional artists, two serious art collectors, review applicants’ event participation based on the following the criteria:

  • Active plein air painting artist with high-quality website reflecting plein air artworks, biography, and artist statement
  • Active participant in plein air events in the US and worldwide
  • Art educational credentials
  • Membership in art organizations (PAPA, LPAPA, OPA, AIS, etc.) and membership status (Signature Member, Master Artist, etc.)
  • Awards received
  • Gallery representation
  • Level of community support (How does the artist support their local community and the plein air community?)
  • Salebility (History of sales at MPAPI events or success at other Plein Air events)
  • Other criteria the Committee determines appropriate (ie: traveling with spouse/partner, special hosting requirements required, allergies, etc.)

Selection is competitive.  If, after reviewing the above criteria, you are interested in being considered for the 2020 invitational, please submit your request to infomauiartsleague@yahoo.com during the months of May-June.

PRE EVENT WORKSHOP WITH SUZIE BAKER

Cost: $400 Base Workshop Price + $12 Processing/Handling Fee + $16.66 HI Exec. Tax

Location: Classroom plus field locations – directions provided
Optional Meet & Greet: Feb 12

Maui Plein airWORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

Suzie Baker focuses her students on color theory and one of the hardest transitiions—taking what you know about color theory outdoors, and  applying it to recognizing and accurately recording the color blocks of a landscape. How color works is science; how to translate colors into your composition and design is art.

The workshop will kick off with a lecture and demo at Pioneer Inn, Lahaina. Students receive instruction on principals of painting ranging from drawing, color, value, composition, color theory and so much more. Each day, students will apply what is being taught by getting outside and painting full days — seeing, recording and observing nature as it changes. Suzie will demo on location and offer one-on-one instruction to all the students as they practice new skills and methods at scenic locations.

ABOUT SUZIE:
Suzie Baker is an award-winning artist whose paintings are regularly on display in magazines, prestigious national shows and plein air invitationals. She serves as the Vice President of Oil Painters of America and holds signature status in that distinguished organization as well as the American Impressionist Society, American Women Artists, and others. In addition to being a still life and portrait artist, Suzie has been painting en plein air since she was a teenager. A sought-after instructor, for her humorous and informative style, Suzie teaches through her instructional video, Color Magic, and in workshops around the nation and close to her home in the Houston area. She will be featured on stage at the Plein Air Convention and Expo 2019.

Representational, painterly, impressionistic, and inspiring—these are all perfect ways to describe Suzie Greer Baker’s paintings. Yet, what matters most to the artist is recording her response to her subjects in a fresh, direct way. “I aim to create paintings that communicate truth without telling the whole story,” says the artist, “and it’s so satisfying when a viewer tells me that one of my paintings conveys the spirit of the subject in a truthful way.”

Suzie’s personal goal is to identify every student’s level and provide strategies to progress through group instruction, example, and individual interaction. Her humorous, informative manner makes tackling this multi-faceted challenge a fun and rewarding experience.

POST EVENT WORKSHOP WITH JOSHUA CLARE

Location: Classroom plus field locations – directions provided

Optional Meet & Greet: Feb 24

joshPaintingWORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

Josh Clare, from Paradise Utah, is a master of the large landscape, one of the principle challenges to painting Maui’s sweeping seascapes and mountain vistas. Students will learn Josh Clare’s method to analyze, design and compose big sky and big landscape, by preparing a preliminary study on a small canvas.

This three-day workshop will focus on the outdoor sketch painting — essential to understanding light and color. Josh will open each day with a lecture and demonstration, after which students will paint and receive individual critiques of their studies. Coaching will focus on learning to see like an artist, emphasizing the fundamental principals necessary to quickly and accurately capture the beauty of nature when painting outdoors.

“My method of creating small sketches or ʻstudiesʻ allows artists to plan their design before embarking on a larger canvas. Wind, weather, moving shadows, insects and the rush to finish are distractions to the creative process. Doing a small study on location first allows artists to explore and hone their creative methods–it worked for me,” says Clare.

Among workshop topics are: values, hue, saturation, drawing, edges, design, and paint application. Also covered are artistic style, and the importance of painting from life as a means to developing one’s own individual voice.

ABOUT JOSH
Born in 1982, Josh grew up drawing and was rarely without a pencil and paper, but it wasn’t until he began studying art at BYU-Idaho that he began painting. That first oil painting class included a trip to the galleries in Jackson Hole (his first visit to an art gallery or museum) and completely changed the course of his life. Since graduating with a BFA in illustration from BYU-Idaho in 2007 Josh has been supporting himself and his family with art–and he thanks God every day for that remarkable blessing. He figures that if he can paint all day, every day, for the next 20 years, eventually he’ll paint something pretty decent.
